The Moreno Valley Animal Shelter is on the hunt for our next best Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) who is paw-sitive and paw-ssionate towards animals! This position follows a 9/80 work schedule, with a standard Tuesday–Saturday assignment and every other Saturday off. This recruitment may close at any time without notice.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) supports the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter by providing essential medical and technical veterinary services under the general direction of contracted veterinarians. This role performs routine and advanced animal care tasks, including health assessments, administering medications and vaccinations, collecting laboratory samples, monitoring animal conditions, and maintaining accurate medical records. The RVT also plays a key role in disease prevention, shelter sanitation protocols, inventory management, and staff training. This position interacts frequently with the public during adoptions, reclaim processes, and community education, while ensuring humane, safe, and compassionate treatment of all animals in the City’s care.

They possess strong technical veterinary skills, sound judgment, and the ability to confidently handle animals of all sizes and temperaments. The ideal RVT is detail-oriented, experienced in performing medical procedures under limited supervision, and comfortable serving as a key liaison to contracted veterinarians. They communicate clearly, provide excellent customer service, and maintain calm and professionalism when working with sick, injured, or frightened animals. A successful candidate is self-motivated, able to multitask effectively, and committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and achieving positive outcomes for adoptable and treatable animals. They will hold a valid RVT certification, demonstrate strong teamwork, and bring a compassionate approach that reflects the City’s values in animal care and welfare.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide routine medical care to animals, including physical examinations to determine the nature of illness, injury, and/or abnormality. Assist veterinarians with technical medical procedures. Collect and label biological specimens from animals including smears for cultures or microscopic examination. Monitor animals’ general health and vital signs while in the Animal Shelter, administer diagnostic tests to validate illnesses. Assist veterinarians with and administers prescribed medications to animals to provide support and nursing care; calculates dosages for sedation, pain management and antibiotics. Maintains inventory of all medical supplies and pharmaceutical equipment, places orders for routine medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. Conducts training sessions for Animal Services staff related to the proper procedures and technical knowledge in performing euthanasia of animals. Establish and follow procedures for the proper housing and mitigation of disease transmissions within the facility, meeting State and County standards and the Animal Services Division requirements. Assists individuals seeking lost animals or adoptable animals; assists customers in making pet selections; responds to public inquiries regarding care and treatment of animals. Advises the public on responsible pet ownership including any medical services provided to animals being adopted or reclaimed by their owners. Updates medical data and behavioral notes in the Animal Services Division’s database system.
OTHER DUTIES
Treat all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job and transmit these values to others. Assist in the office with preparation of required paperwork and assist in the kennel with routine maintenance. Provides microchip services to residents impounded animals, including scanning and implanting chips.

Requirements
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, and two years of recent work experience that include working with animals in a veterinary hospital or other animal facility with appropriate medical training and certification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications: Valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurance under the City's vehicle insurance policy. Possession of a valid Registered Veterinary Technician Certificate issued by the California State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine.
